24 Hr Volvo Bus Service to Bangalore International Airport

Air-conditioned Volvo service to Bangalore Airport

Most Bangaloreans are already aware of this excellent service provided by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) but this blog is for the benefit of those tourists visiting this garden city.

Most of us living in Bangalore may not appreciate the efforts put in by BMTC to keep this service going, since most of these buses run half full and neither do we realise the convenience this brings to us until we use it. The best part of this service is that these buses run at half hr intervals 24 hrs a day with 1 hr interval between 1.30 to 4am due to low traffic during this time.

With most international flights taking off or landing at nite, we have been using this bus service to ferry our friends, relatives and clients regularly and they all love it. These buses are punctual, clean, comfortable, reliable and most importantly, they are cheap. This is the cheapest mode of transport to and from the airport which is located about 38 kms from the city centre.

Bus bay at the Bangalore Airport

An average ticket is priced between Rs 125 to Rs 190 ($2.5 – $3.5) for an A/c volvo coach depending on the distance traveled, while a Meru Cab or Easy Cab would cost between Rs 500 to Rs 800 ($10 – $16) for the same distance. So if you are a group of less than 4 or over 4 members it makes sense to use the bus since a cab can carry only 4 people.

There are 11 routes which span across the city to reach every corner with designated pick up points. You can even source the mobile number of the bus conductor from the BMTC control room or at your nearest bus depot who will tell you exactly when the bus would get to your stop.

When the airport was inaugurated, most of them complained about the distance and the infrastructure and said that Hyderabad airport was better in every count. But today, the connectivity that Bangalore airport has to the city is much better than Hyderabad (which is also located about 45kms from the city) or any other airport in India. Recently, these volvo’s have even started ferrying non airport travelers who either travel to their work place or home which has helped increase revenues for the department.

I have used both the A/c and Non A/c volvo buses to and from the airport and they are safe, comfortable, affordable and very efficient.

I suggest we all resort to these buses as a mode of transport to the airport before BMTC decides to shut down the service due to low usage!

  Hi Pragati,
  There is a bus to the airport every half hr during the day time. So just go to the BIAL pickup point 2 hrs in advance (5.30pm) so that u’r sure to reach the airport in time.

  As per my knowledge, there is a 1 hr break in service between 4 – 5am but the buses will be waiting at the bay for passengers to board and wait. Guess the rules might have changed now. Take BIAL Route No 5 to 5th Block Jayanagar or BIAL No 12 upto 4th Blk Jayanagar. The charge is Rs 150/-

@ Mee – This service is awesome and totally reliable.
They cover almost every part of Bangalore with multiple buses covering central areas like St Marks Rd, Raj Bhavan, Mekhri Circle & Hebbal Junction. All we need to do is identify their pick up points from a particular area.

  You can also take Route No 7 or 7A from Koramangala / HSR layout.
  
  @Deepak – The Volvo bus take the outer ring rd which is bit longer but faster and will reach Electronic City in about 2 hrs. Guess the cab will reach there in 1hr 45mins hrs but will cost you much much more. You will need to take Route No 8 to get to your destination. Pls refer link above.

hey, i checked out on the internet the schedule of the airport shuttle but just wanted to clarify that these busses do ply in the night too? i gotta take a flight 6 in the morning so will probably have to catch a shuttle of arnd 3am. sure they wont leave me stranded ?

  Ashish, These buses are quite regular and do stick to the timings but for the odd breakdowns. So if you are not comfortable, do visit your local bus depot & get the schedule checked and carry the depot mobile number. From them you can obtain the mobile number of the driver / conductor of that particular bus a day before the journey and tell them about your pickup point.

My house is in Hebbal, Dairy gate and office in 80 feet Road Indiranagar.

Thought of taking pass next month and try it out for a month instead of travelling by car.

I took the Bus from Hebbal (Columbia Asia) to Indiranagar 80′ Road where my office is at 7:30 and I reached office exactly at 8:00 AM, the fare was only Rs. 40/- much lesser than commuting by car and I was more relaxed.

The driver and Conductor were polite and gave me lots of tips which I can follow.

Every one using the car should stop and try this out really it’s worth.

I am a huge fan of Volvos. In 2005 (If I am not mistaken) Bangalore was the first city in India to get these hotties or should I say hunks to get on the road for public use! I was in Bangalore at that time and have enjoyed the service… We in Mumbai recently got the Volvos under the NMMT (Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Transportation), Navi Mumbai is a suburb of Mumbai.

I had come to Bangalore this month and was glad to see the Volvos lined up at the airport!

Trust me folks BMTC has a huge number of Volvos and the provide you with the best of the service by connecting most of the City.

I have started taking these bus and it’s really tension free, please find below a complaint that I made to them and they are prompt in responding too with action taken.

I should have done this long time back, I could have saved lots of money from this also it is a National waste by using car for just one person going to office.

I used to use my car to my office from my House which is in Hebbal Kempapura, (near Columbia Asia Hospital) and my Office is in 80 Feet Road Indiranagar, last 3 days I have started taking the BIAS Volvo bus and is really very good.

Today when I took the 7:30AM bus (BIAS 4)from Columbia Asia Hospital, the conductor told me that from tomorrow I have to take the bus from Hebbal near Baptist Hospital and not from Columbia Asia Hospital, is it true and please let me know how to sort this problem, going all the way to Hebbal is not easy and I will have to take a Auto.

I work for Columbia Asia Hospital’s Corporate office which is in Indiranagar.

  @Aanchal, We have some suggestions already posted in one of the comments. There is one starting from HSR BDA Complex and you can refer the official BMTC link posted in the comments section for timings.
  
  @Jack, Shantinagar Bus stand is a major junction for many routes and u’ll find once bus coming thru every 10 – 15 mins.
  
  @Karthik, There is one Route 8 from Electronic City that crosses marathalli underbridge and you can also catch another route from outside the Old Airport.

  Thanks Max.. and you dont’ need to book the ticket in advance. Just get out of the airport and look for the City bus sign. U can pickup the ticket from the conductor on board and will cost you from Rs 120 to 180 depending on the distance.

Hi,

I work on M.G.Road near Taj Residency. Need to reach my work place at around 8.30 am daily from Columbia Asia hospital, Hebbal.

Also would be finishing work around 6.15 pm and would like to take a volvo bus from Taj Residency around 6.20 pm back to Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal.

Dear all,

thouse who only see the short comings af these services, please correct yourselves, I stay in Mysore and my job calls for extensive traveling, these buses are so comfortable and predictable, we always take bus from Mysore to bangalore and then an other bus to airport, it work out in just 20% cost of any low cost taxy.

it is a great service and the staff of these busus are very kind and some times gives stops where ever you want while coming back from Airport.

it is fentastic service, thanks to all who have done this

  @ Deepika – As per our knowledge the travel time still remains the same but the bus timings for your route might have changed to accomodate passengers and flight timings. Its better for your to take Route 5 or Route 12 from Jayanagar 4th Block bus stand where the frequency is much higher.

Recently I travelled from BIAS to Jayanagar 4th Block. The ticket rates were 150/- from BIAS to Jaynagar 4th Block till 1st December 2009. When I came on 9th December the bus conductor demanded 165/- rupees for the same destination. The information cell told me 150/- and the conductor is charging 165/-. I went to the Information cell and asked him the same question, the guy sitting in the info cell looked at the conductor and I dunno wht gesture they had between them and then suddenly this guy is telling the rates are changed…..
This is ridiculous……….There should be some website where the rates to particular stops must be displayed.

  @ Avani, These buses do not need to be booked in advance. Just hop on and purchase your ticket. You will find links to the BMTC website on this blog page which contains timings and routes for the various airport bus
  
  @Others, It is quite shocking to notice that most of the comments posted here have requests for bus routes. Does anyone actually even reads thru these blogs?? cos if they did they would find the link to the website which contains these information.

How much time does it take from BU to the airport, if i go by the outer ring road at 5pm, what time am i expected to reach the airport if i start at 5pm from the BU

  @Pranav – since 5pm is peak time, you will need 2hrs to reach the airport. Suggest you take the road through the city (Mysore rd, town hall, cubbon park, Le Meridian, mekhri circle, hebbal, airport) since it might be bit faster.

The BMTC website isnt wrking. so unable to get the timings of vaayu vajra… can anyone tell the timings of buses to BIAL from E-City and from Jayanagar 4th block?
my frnd has to leave frm E-city and I have to catch a bus at 4th block and our flight is in the evening at 8 pm …

  @ Preeti – There is a bus every 15 mins from 4th Block Jayanagar since Route 5 and 12 pass by this stop. Will try and post the entire timings chart in this blog shortly.

I am not sure to accept the article or not since..if you see in the timings most of the routes there are no bus available from night till morning 7. For eg to electronic city the only bus from BIAL starts at 7 am before which there is a single bus at 12.00. Wherein most International flights arrive between 12-3. So how do these people commute is still a mystery. Even if they take Bial bus from in between how do they go to another place take auto???.

  @Praveen – There are two routes No 6 and No 4 which go via photo flash and Lake Side hospital near Frazer town and stops in front of HDFC Bank. Think that’s the best place for u to catch one.
  
  @Siva – I agree with you comment partly since most of the routes still have buses plying at nite. Only the less popluar routes they have cut down at nite.
  Best thing to do is get upto the Double Rd (KH Rd) bus stand by auto / meru cab / easy cab and catch the bus from there. You will get Route 5, 12 and 7 from there.

BMTC offers good service to airport and from airport, But if you have luggage. Then always better hire taxi in Bangalore. May be they charge more than Bus, But it is comfortable. If you have a 3-4 members then it is same like bus according to the fare
